• Wegovy® contains the same active ingredient as Ozempic® (semaglutide), and is developed by the same company. The key difference is in the registration: 
• Ozempic® is registered in South Africa for the treatment of type 2 diabetes.
• Wegovy®, however, is the first weekly injectable treatment in South Africa that is specifically registered and approved for weight management.
• Tirzepatide (e.g. Mounjaro) is currently not available for prescription. This is because it has not been made widely available and does not align with our current protocols. Please visit an in-person doctor if you require a prescription for Tirzepatide at this time.

Liraglutide (Saxenda/Victoza) may be best suited for you. Liraglutide is a daily injection used to assist with weight loss in adults who are overweight or obese. It works by reducing appetite, helping you feel full sooner and eat less. It should be used together with a reduced-calorie diet and increased physical activity.

Semaglutide

• Semaglutide (Wegovy) may be best suited for you. Semaglutide is a once-weekly injection used to support weight loss in adults who are overweight or obese. It works by mimicking a natural hormone (GLP-1) that helps reduce appetite, slow digestion, and promote a feeling of fullness. This leads to reduced calorie intake and gradual weight loss over time. 
• Semaglutide is the active ingredient in both Wegovy® and Ozempic®. Both treatments are developed by the same company. The difference is only in the registration:
• Ozempic® is registered in South Africa for the treatment of type 2 diabetes.

Lifestyle changes are important for the comprehensive management of obesity, as it is often linked to lifestyle factors e.g. poor diet or inactivity. It is strongly advised to first attempt lifestyle changes before deciding on treatment.
Regular aerobic and strength exercises are strongly advised. Aim for at least 30 minutes of brisk walking, 5 times per week (150 minutes per week).

A medical workup and lifestyle changes are required before considering treatment for weight management:

1. Blood pressure and Blood glucose readings: please check your readings at your local pharmacy/clinic or self check. If the readings are abnormal, please urgently visit an in-person doctor for further care.
2. Weight management blood workup: you will need blood tests including HbA1c, kidney function, thyroid function, cholesterol done at your local lab
