Consent:

• Avoid sexual activity while the cream is on:

• • • Do not engage in sexual activity while imiquimod is on your skin, as it can weaken condoms, diaphragms, or cause irritation for your partner.
    • Wash off the cream before any sexual contact.

• Avoid sensitive areas:

• • • Do not apply imiquimod to the inside of the vagina, rectum, or urethra (inside the penis). This can cause severe irritation or damage.
    • If warts are in those areas, talk to your healthcare provider for appropriate treatment options.

• Possible side effects:

• • • Mild skin irritation (redness, itching, burning, swelling) is common and usually manageable. It typically means the cream is working, but if severe irritation occurs, please stop the treatment and ask your healthcare provider for an alternative treatment.
    • Some patients may develop sores, scabs, or peeling skin where the cream was applied. If the reaction becomes too painful or uncomfortable, consult your healthcare provider.

• Be patient with results:

• • • Imiquimod takes time to work. It can take several weeks or even months for the warts to clear. Keep using the cream as prescribed even if you don’t see immediate results.

• Monitor for recurrence:

• • • Genital warts may recur even after treatment because imiquimod works by boosting your immune system to fight the virus (HPV) but does not eliminate it entirely. Maintain regular follow-up with your healthcare provider to monitor for any recurrence.

• Avoid covering the treated area:

• • • Do not use bandages or occlusive dressings to cover the area after applying the cream. Let the treated skin breathe for better healing and reduced irritation.

• Pregnancy and imiquimod:

• • • If you are pregnant or planning to become pregnant, please stop the treatment as the safety of imiquimod during pregnancy has not been fully established.

• Avoid harsh soaps or products:

• • Use mild soap and avoid perfumes or harsh skincare products on the treated area, as they can increase irritation. Let the skin heal naturally.
• Always read the medication leaflet for full instructions and possible side effects.
