There is a recent development in weight-loss treatment relevant to managing obesity. The first oral GLP-1 weight-loss medication, the Wegovy pill, has been approved in the United States. The pill offers a needle-free alternative to the weekly injection many people already know.

What Is the Wegovy Pill?

Wegovy is a once-weekly injectable medication containing semaglutide, used internationally for chronic weight management and to reduce cardiovascular risk. Traditionally, it is administered as an injection used alongside lifestyle changes like diet and exercise.

Now, Novo Nordisk (the manufacturer) has developed a once-daily pill version of Wegovy that contains the same active ingredient. This tablet form has been shown in clinical trials to help adults with obesity or who are overweight achieve significant weight loss and lower cardiovascular risk, much like the injectable version.

How the Wegovy Pill Differs from the Injection

The Wegovy pill is an oral option in obesity care, not only a matter of convenience:

• Daily routine: a once daily tablet that fits easily into any lifestyle.
• Proven efficacy: trials have shown weight reductions comparable to injections when used along with diet and exercise.

How It Works

Just like the injectable Wegovy, the pill belongs to a class of medicines called GLP-1 receptor agonists. These drugs work by mimicking hormones in the gut that regulate appetite and insulin, helping:

However, because the digestive system absorbs pills differently, the Wegovy tablet contains a higher dose of semaglutide than the injection to achieve similar results.

Is Wegovy Available in South Africa Yet?

Not yet.
While injectable Wegovy has already been registered and launched in South Africa for chronic weight management, the oral Wegovy pill has not been registered by the South African Health Products Regulatory Authority (SAHPRA) and is not available here yet. 

Current injectable medications available in South Africa include:

• Wegovy: once-weekly injection registered for weight loss.
• Mounjaro: once-weekly dual receptor injection registered for weight loss.
• Ozempic: once-weekly injection registered mainly for type 2 diabetes.

For now, South African patients interested in GLP-1 therapy for weight management still rely primarily on weekly injection options. 

When Could the Pill Come to SA?

At the moment, there is no confirmed launch date for the Wegovy pill in South Africa. Novo Nordisk has begun rolling out the product internationally, with regulatory submissions underway in other regions like Europe and, potentially, future SAHPRA review.

Given the high rates of obesity in South Africa, the Wegovy pill may be a relevant additional treatment option for patients if it is registered here.

Will the Pill Replace Injections?

It is not yet clear. While the oral form offers convenience for people who prefer not to inject, some clinicians think injections may remain important. Oral and injectable GLP-1 therapies are likely to coexist, giving patients more choice.

Once the Wegovy pill is registered in South Africa, it will be available via prescription from registered medical doctors.
