Wegovy® (semaglutide) is the first weekly injectable treatment officially registered for weight management in South Africa. While Ozempic® contains the same active ingredient, it is registered for type 2 diabetes. Wegovy® is specifically approved to help with safe and effective weight loss when combined with a healthy diet and regular exercise. Wegovy is developed by the same company as Ozempic.

How to take Wegovy:

• Before you use the pen for the first time, please ask your pharmacist for instructions, follow the detailed instructions in the package leaflet and use the downloadable Wegovy app for guidance. 
• Wegovy is given as an injection under the skin (subcutaneous injection). Do not inject it into a vessel or muscle.
• Wegovy (semaglutide) should be injected subcutaneously (just under the skin) in areas where you can pinch the skin. Recommended sites are:
  • Abdomen: at least 5 cm from the belly button.
  • Thigh: upper outer thigh.
  • Upper arm: back of the arm (usually needs assistance).
• Always use a new needle for each injection, and rotate injection sites to avoid skin irritation.
• Do not adjust doses without your doctor’s instructions.

When to use Wegovy:

• Wegovy should be used once a week on the same day each week.
• You can give yourself the injection at any time of the day – regardless of meals.  To help you remember to inject this medicine once a week only, it is recommended to note the chosen weekday (e.g. Wednesday) on the carton and to write the date on the carton every time you have injected it.

Possible side effects:

Wegovy (semaglutide) is generally well-tolerated, but like any medication, it can cause side effects. 

The most common side effects include nausea, vomiting, diarrhea, stomach pain, and constipation. These are often mild and decrease as your body adjusts to the medication. Nausea can be reduced by eating smaller meals and avoiding greasy, fried, fatty and spicy foods.

  • Gastrointestinal issues:
    • Nausea
    • Vomiting
    • Diarrhea
    • Abdominal pain
    • Constipation
    • Heartburn
  • General discomfort:
    • Fatigue
    • Dizziness
    • Headache
    • Runny nose
    • Sore throat
  • Hypoglycemia – low blood-sugar levels (especially when taken with other diabetes medications):
    • Shaking
    • Sweating
    • Fast heartbeat
    • Blurred vision
    • Dizziness
    • Tingling hands/feet

• Other side effects (less common):
  • Pancreatitis (inflammation of the pancreas)
  • Gallbladder problems
  • Kidney problems, including kidney failure
  • Severe gastrointestinal problems, such as gastroparesis
  • Changes in vision in people with type 2 diabetes
  • Possible increased risk of thyroid tumors, including cancer
  • Severe allergic reactions
  • Depression or thoughts of suicide
  • Increased chance of food getting into your lungs during procedures that require anaesthesia or deep sedation – always inform your treating doctor of your current medications.

Exercise and eat a balanced diet:

• Wegovy is most effective when combined with exercise and a balanced diet.
• Aim for at least 150 minutes of moderate exercise per week (e.g. walking, swimming, muscle training) to support weight loss.
• Drink plenty of water, especially if you experience gastrointestinal side effects like diarrhea or vomiting, to prevent dehydration.

 Pregnancy and breastfeeding:

• Wegovy should be discontinued at least 2 months before a planned pregnancy. 
• Wegovy is not recommended for use during pregnancy or while breastfeeding due to potential risks and the lack of sufficient studies to establish safety in these specific situations.
• It is important to use effective contraception while using Wegovy.

Storage instructions:

• Store your pen in the fridge (2-8℃, do not freeze). 
• Always store the pen with the pen cap on and in its original packaging to protect it from light.
