Ozempic, a medication initially approved for managing type 2 diabetes, has recently gained significant attention for its potential benefits in weight loss. By influencing appetite and food intake through mechanisms in the brain and digestive system, Ozempic can be a game-changer for those looking to shed extra kilograms sustainably.

How Ozempic® is given:

  • Always use this medicine exactly as prescribed. Before you use the pen for the first time, please ask your pharmacist for instructions or follow the detailed instructions in the package leaflet.
  • Ozempic is given as an injection under the skin (subcutaneous injection). Do not inject it into a vessel or muscle.
  • The best place to inject Ozempic (semaglutide) is typically where you can pinch an area of your skin to ensure the injection is administered subcutaneously (just under the skin). The most commonly recommended sites for injecting Ozempic include:
    • The abdomen – this area usually has more subcutaneous fat, which makes it an ideal site for injection.
    • The thigh – the upper, outer area of the thigh is another good option as this area also usually has a good amount of fatty tissue.
    • The upper arm – the back of the upper arm can also be used, but this area might be harder to reach and typically requires assistance from another person for the injection.

When to use Ozempic:

  • Ozempic should be used once a week on the same day each week.
  • You can give yourself the injection at any time of the day – regardless of meals.  To help you remember to inject this medicine once a week only, it is recommended to note the chosen weekday (e.g. Wednesday) on the carton and to write the date on the carton every time you have injected it.

Further instructions:

  • Store your pen in the fridge. Always use this medicine exactly as prescribed. Check with your doctor, pharmacist or nurse if you are not sure.
  • Due to a shortage of the low dose pens (0.25mg – 0.5mg), the 1mg Ozempic pen may be used under strict instructions. Please maintain accuracy when performing these instructions for your own safety. There are no indicators marked on the 1mg Ozempic pen to administer a lower dose, but a lower dose can be given by adjusting the number of clicks when you turn the dial on the 1mg Ozempic pen:
    • 0.25mg dose using a 1mg pen = 18 clicks
    • 0.5mg dose using a 1mg pen = 36 clicks
  • Pregnancy and breast-feeding:
    • Ozempic is not recommended for use during pregnancy or while breastfeeding due to potential risks and the lack of sufficient studies to establish safety in these specific situations.
    • It is important to use effective contraception while using Ozempic.
    • For women who are planning to become pregnant, an alternative treatment must be discussed.
    • Ozempic must be stopped at least 2 months before a planned pregnancy due to the long half-life.
